Beacon-Oread Street
Revitalization Project

General contractor for this project was Brian Shorten Contracting.

The Beacon-Oread Street Revitalization Project was one of the most important initiatives to take hold in Main South. The project targeted one-block area that had been devastated by fire and abandonment. Its intention was to bring about a very visible and most importantly positive transformation in the neighborhood. The project gained support and attention from neighborhood residents, who were delighted to see abandoned burned out properties that once lined Oread Street transformed into attractive affordable housing. The 34-unit project was completed in October of 2001 and since then has helped prevent any further neighborhood decline by halting the deterioration of adjacent housing.

Sustaining a business relationship with a company that is able to create attractive and compatible new housing in an otherwise blighted neighborhood is essential, therefore the Main South CDC chose the architectural firm of Domenech, Hicks & Krockmalnic. Known for their work in the Dudley Street area in Roxbury, MA, DHK had the experience and understanding to bring this project to fruition.

As the Main South CDC moves forward with other similar projects, it promises to keep the neighborhood informed of its plans. Residents in the area have been lobbying the CDC to take an active role in promoting its revitalization and as promised the CDC will do everything it can to ensure this project serves as the catalyst for the continued enhancement of this area.
