Main South CDC:
The Center for
Community Revitalization

At a press event in August 1999, the Main South CDC announced the acquisition of the former Family Health and Social Service building located at 875 Main Street. As planned, this newly acquired property became the home of the Center for Community Revitalization, a comprehensive facility which contains the Main South CDC offices, the Neighborhood Alert Center, community meeting rooms, economic development services and Worcester Community Child Care Resource (WCCCA), an affordable day care center for community residents which boasts a brand new playground on the premises.

Since Family Health relocated to the City Hospital campus several years ago, the old building had fallen into decline, standing as a blighted eyesore on the Main Street corridor leading into Main South. With its acquisition and renovation, solidifying the community and providing programs and services sorely needed by the Main South residents became more viable.

The outfitting and renovation amounted to $280,000.00 and the building was completed in the fall of 2000. Of the Center’s 10,000 square feet of usable space, roughly 5,000 square feet on the first floor of the two-story building is allotted for the Main South CDC offices and the Neighborhood Alert Center. The remainder of the space on the first floor (3,500) contains space for an after-school homework center, made accessible to the residents of Main South. The second floor of the center, totaling 1,500 square feet, is split into two office segments. The first half includes  a conference room and Main South CDC offices, while the second half is allocated for economic development and “Welfare-to-Work” training programs including a computer room designed for residents to take computer classes as well as job search through the internet and resume writing.
